Big Guns Start Competition
Thursday, 5th of August @ 11:00pm

Norwood and Newport Hills kicked off the Mens Open competition tonight at
Newport Hills pool. It was a story of youth and vigor against age, wisdom
and some large midsections. Newport started strong with some great inside
moves from Cal Berkeley freshman, soon to be Redlands player, Ryan Hall and
some outside shooting from Wilson Walters. The first period ended at 4-1. In
the second period, after the teams switched ends, the outside guns for
Norwood came alive. Shots were fired from 6 and 7 meters as Newport backed
off outside and paid a price that ended the half in a tie 4-4. Newport
pulled ahead shooting in the deep end in the third period. Pat Veith, Wilson
Walters, among others, turned up the transition game and applied some
intense pressure that started to move the score out of reach. Newport
continued a tight defense in the fourth that allowed them to hold on to the
lead they had built. It was a competitive game all the way through. Many
of the kids around the pool commented that they enjoyed watching the old
wiley veterans go at it. Any of you that have never been to a Mens Open game
with your kids should take the opportunity. Some of these games feature
players with upwards of 30+ years of playing experience both at Midlakes as
kids and also in Collegiate and Masters National Tournaments. The games are
free, entertaining and competitive. Get out and enjoy them. Cheer on the old
guys and see some great polo.
